Spice It Up

I hate admitting it, but my closet seriously lacks color. There's nothing wrong with a neutral closet, but sometimes it's fun to add a little bit of edge. This post is centered around four easy ways to make a casual or colorless look a little more spunky. If you don't want to break the bank, buy classic pieces in neutral colors and add onto them with these four simple steps!

Spice It Up #1: Makeup

Red seems to be one of the colors of the season. Every store I've step foot in (virtually and physically) has advertised the bright tomato red at the front of their store. I personally love it, but if you're not here for the red, you can incorporate it through makeup. One of my favorite ways to spice up a neutral look is through a statement lip. My go to lip is Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Matte Lipstick. It's $20 at Sephora/Ulta, but it's worth the money.

This red lip is in the color Spicy. I bought it awhile ago to wear to Nats/Capitals games, but I ended up falling in love with it and wearing it all the time. It doesn't smudge or get all over your face when you wear it. I actually ate a cheeseburger from red robin for dinner, took a shower when I got home. washed my face, and it was still on. I had to scrub it off with makeup remover. I bought it in Rio and Milkshake, too. HIGHLY suggest picking it up next time you're at a beauty store.

I personally love this lip because it's so eye grabbing. The whole outfit can be subtle, but wearing a statement lip can take the entire look to the next level.

Spice It Up #2: Animal Print

Another one of my favorite ways to make an outfit pop is through animal print. I'm obsessed with leopard print when it comes to clothing and accessories. I don't know if it's this way for everyone, but I feel like leopard gives off a very glam and girl power vibe, so I love to incorporate it into my wardrobe. I live for cheetah print fur coats, but again if you want to be more subtle, you can sneak it in through accessories.

For this look, I wore a cheetah choker from PacSun to complement the wildness of the red lip and add some print to the top of my outfit. To tie it in, I wore my favorite leopard booties from Charlotte Russe. I got these bad boys on sale for $20 last winter, but they're back on the website retailing at $40.

The best part about animal print is that leopard print never seems to go out of style. These pieces can be long lasting and a staple in your wardrobe regardless of the trend changes with clothing.

Spice It Up #3: Daring Denim

Another way to spice up an outfit is through unconventional denim. I'm not just talking about ripped jeans, I'm talking about color blocks, fringe, and embroidery. The "daring denim" trend, as I like to call it, is all over the place. My favorite pair of jeans are the ones in these photos. I got them from the American Eagle Outfitters outlet for $20 in the spring. They're color blocked, hemmed unevenly, and feature fringe at the bottom. They can add a lot to any outfit, as can other jeans of this sort. These jeans are being featured at stores like H&M, Forever 21, and Zara if you're looking to be on trend without spending a fortune.

Spice It Up #4: Jackets and Coats

The last way I switch up my outfits are through jackets. You can make an outfit last through the seasons (and even the years) by using this tactic. I buy classic jackets in both neutral and funky colors so that I can subtly outfit repeat without anyone noticing. I switch off between leather jackets and fur coats most often. I have about four leather jackets and seven fur coats that I rotate (I have a problem, I know. Catch me in Shopaholics Anonymous in a few years).

This jacket in particular is one of my newest favorites. Long duster coats are in, and I'm loving this Veronica Trench Coat from Two Feathers. It's light enough for fall and it adds a ton to this outfit, don't you think?!
