Let's Groove

September 4, 2017

In honor of one of the greatest funk bands of all time (Earth, Wind, & Fire) and their song September, I'm kicking off this month a little groovier than usual.

Recently in the fashion world, the 70s have been making a huge comeback. Pretty much every time I left the house this summer, my mom would say, "I had that same outfit when I was younger!"

When I was little, my family would always joke around and call me the flower child. I was obsessed with the 70s, Austin Powers was my favorite move (strange for a six year old, I know), and I collected toy VW bugs and busses. Not only that... I was a hippie for more than one Halloween, I lived and breathed by Herbie Fully Loaded, and my favorite CD was a compilation of funk songs.

Now, in the midst of everything I loved when I was little being back on the rise, it's a little overwhelming for my wallet. Every time I go shopping I have to calm myself down before blowing hundreds of dollars on clothing, shoes, and accessories. It's too much. Colorful aviators, wide legged pants, patent leather boots, oh my!

My dad has been in a band ever since I was little, which exposed me to a ton of funk music at a young age. The first song I ever learned how to play on the guitar was Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry. My second concert ever was Earth, Wind, & Fire. It was pretty crazy growing up that way, because everyone else my age was listening to Flo Rida and Crazy Frog in their spare time while I was singing karaoke to Cameo.

Snowballing off of that, the drummer from the band my dad is in has an old VW bug that he restored. I contacted him asking if he would be interested in doing a shoot with one, and the result was better than I could've ever expected. I want to take this time to shout out Matt for doing such an amazing job on these photos AND allowing me to use his car for it. Thank you so much, you were a pleasure to work with!

For this shoot, I went all out. I figured if I was doing a styled shoot, I could go a little crazy. I'm wearing a pair of high waisted, wide legged palazzo pants from Forever21. Honestly, I was terrified they were going to rip the entire time because the booty area was a bit tight on me (sounds funny until you were me, modeling, thinking your pants were going to rip every time you posed differently).  Anyway, the navy and burnt orange in the pants made for some eye popping color, and added onto that 70s vibe I was going for. I paired this with a burnt orange Van Halen tee that I knotted in the center to expose more of the pants. This didn't go without thought. I actually wore this shirt, because Jump by Van Halen was in Herbie Fully Loaded, and it was my favorite song on the soundtrack. Pairing this with the Beetle brought back my childhood a bit.
